“for we women are not only the deities of the household fire, but the flame of the soul itself.”― Rabindranath Tagore, The Home and the World Pic Courtesy :http://www.thenakeddecorator.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/tumblr_mc9ik7dILy1rdu7x2o1_500-300×300.jpg True, women in literature have taken many forms- Juliet or Desdemona of Shakespeare, Bimala or Charulata of Tagore, Durga of Bibhutibhushan, Saudamini or Parvati of Saratchadra, Devi Chaudhrani of Bankim, Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind, Jane Eyre from Jane Eyre, Hua Mulan from The Ballad of Mulan, Even Cindrella or Snow White from the fairyland, Georgina of Enid Blyton, Elizabeth from The Pride and the Prejudice, Tracy and other women protagonists of Sidney Sheldon, Princess Sultana of Princess Trilogy by Jean Sasson, Hermione from Harry Potter series, Lisbeth from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to all those who dared in Nirbhaya by Kkusum Chopra. Likewise, women in the society have seen the likes of Rani Laxmibai, Florence Nightingale, Marie Curie, Mother Teresa, Cleopatra, Kalpana Chawla, Indira Gandhi, Malala Yousouf, Indira Nooyi and many more till the likes of Nirbhaya who ‘truly’ dared. Some Sita, Saraswati somewhere facing life everyday with a new zeal, being put to test everyday with a new rule, deprived of their rights with a new excuse and so on. They have changed in conviction, ambition, innocence and their outlook towards life and society. But I guess one thing that has not changed is the fact that they are WOMEN and their struggle, their emotions, their need to make their mark in the society and life. To me I guess only one thing has changed today- WOMEN WRITE THEIR OWN STORY IN LITERATURE and WOMEN MAKE THEIR OWN DESTINY IN SOCIETY, mostly. Their roles somehow remains the same- being a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a friend, a guide, a philosopher, a creator, a destroyer and above all a dreamer. Today Anne Frank, Malala, Hillary Clinton and Sushmita Banerjee writes their own story, J K Rowling, Jhumpa Lahiri, Harper Lee reaches the mass with the pen. Today, Mary Kom writes her destiny, Janet Yellen reached the top, Barkha Dutt makes her own mark. These are just a few and the list is endless. A sneak peak into the status of women in the current Indian society. On the contrary, another picture where women have excelled in all walks of life. Pic Courtesy: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/photo/45314923.cms They say it is a man’s world. But then again it can be a woman’s world too. Times are changing and so is the face of woman in literature and society. Her is now stronger, more determined, powerful, tough, more aware of her rights, more thoughtful, more participating, more of everything she was NOT and SHOULD BE. According to reports, there are around 24% women in Indian workforce that is around 117 million out of 478 million. To visualize their progress, readers can go through the latest report by Sheroes – Women in Workplace, Sheroes report 2014. The derogatory state is evident from the daily news in newspaper.
